During this edition of Antwerp Art Weekend, Gallery Sofie Van de Velde presents two “strands of looking” as it were, presented over the two galleries of the South and the New South. While the one exhibition will be more focused on narrative in figurative painting, the other one will touch on the momentary, in formally simple works. Reduction or enhancement— what is illuminated in production?
The group exhibition at their venue at Antwerp South will be an exhibition focussed rather on the cerebral and conceptual. A formal and a minimal material approach marks the exhibition we would like to put together. Many practices in this show have a momentary, almost performative aspect to them, which they would like to highlight in the selection of the works.
Gallery Sofie Van de Velde, located in two areas in Antwerp, stands for entrepreneurship in art. Through the participation in art fairs and exhibitions, the gallery focuses on representing artists in a strong international network.
The location at Nieuw Zuid, which is shared with PLUS-ONE Gallery, presents a strong and diverse exhibition program. Both galleries share not only a physical space but also a philosophy, believing in a positive and transparent attitude of collaboration while maintaining their own perspective on artistic choices. In 2020, the gallery opened a second location in Antwerp South, which is dedicated to solo exhibitions by Belgian and international artists. This gallery operates as an alternating exhibition space with PLUS-ONE Gallery, allowing for a diverse and dynamic curatorial program.
